Palawan to host Palarong Pambansa
MANILA, Philippines -- Barring any major hitches, this year’s Palarong Pambansa will push through as scheduled in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan province. The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Tuesday finalized the venue of the Palaro with both government agencies promising to pool their resources for the April 20-26 2008 sports meet.
PSC commissioner Eric Loretizo made the announcement after a meeting with officials of DepEd, led by undersecretary Ramon Bacani and task force chief of school sports Len Toledo, and the Palaro.
“After setting up the date and the venue, we will begin discussing the issues and concerns surrounding the Palaro hosting within the month,” said Loretizo, the PSC’s point man for the DepEd-organized Palaro. Loretizo and Toledo will meet again on Jan. 28 to jump-start the preparations for the week-long games.
With Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn as host, the 2008 edition of the Palaro will have 17 events in the high school category and 14 disciplines in the elementary division. Loretizo said the government sports agency would take a more active role in the Palaro by helping the DepEd strengthen and improve the technical aspect of running the games.
